USF’s Nurse Anesthesia program gains national... →
This thread is relevant to my interests in two ways. First, I work for USF Health, so I’m proud to see all this shiny technology. And second, my father-in-law is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), so I’m thinking he’ll appreciate seeing the story too. But will the students perform equally well without dramatic green lighting on the walls?

Organic chemistry question
I passed high-school chemistry back in 1991 and I haven’t thought about it much since then. We didn’t cover O-chem. Here’s my question. I saw a disinfectant label that listed an ingredient as n-Alkyl (40% C12, 50% C14, 10% C16) yada yada yada. So does that represent a mixture of three different alkyls? And is it mixed that way in order to get slightly different molecule sizes so...

Script for an xkcd fan strip
He: Want to go to Disney this weekend?
She: No thanks — I have philosophical problems with them.
He: No, you mean you have *ethical* problems.
She: No, I actually have *philosophical* problems with Disney. For one thing, I prefer authenticity to artifice. And besides, don't you think that it would be cheaper to convince us that we were walking through a theme park than to actually build it? For all we know, Disney doesn't exist.
He: Wait — you think the entire park is a park SIMULATOR?
She: I'm not even convinced there's a simulator out there. For all I know, I could just be a brain in a jar hooked up to a really good simulation of life.
He: I... I'm sorry I asked. Now I've got a headache.
She: Don't worry. Your head might just be part of my simulation.

"You-all wanna hear a Holocaust joke?" "Why,...
Me: Hi, I know your name is Richard Reich and you work at the university -- are you the Richard Reich who's involved in the Lions Club chapter near campus?
Richard Reich: No, but with a name like that, he's got to be a good guy.
Me: So noted. I hope there aren't three of you around here, because you've heard that joke about six million times.

When you say "love your curves", mean it.
Dear Ro Martinez: I noticed that in your recent article “Love Your Curves” (Tampa Woman Online, issue 5, p. 12), you started out by saying “Accept the fact that curves are beautiful.” This was an excellent beginning; it’s too bad that later on the same page you said that curvy women should use color and accessories to “draw the eye away from problem areas. For...

“Hardsuit fighting”? Oh, you mean stick jocks.  “Rapier community”? Oh, you mean wire weenies. noshitthereiwas: lochridge: There are two main categories of fighting in the Society for Creative Anachronism. The more public and popular is what we refer to as Hardsuit fighting. These are the knights in full armor who fight with rattan swords and shields. They’re great...
